GENERAL SAWING PROCEDURES

BEFORE Starting the Saw:

  1. Make sure to use the correct blade specification and saw for the particular job.
  2. Inspect the blade carefully. If there are any signs of damage or unusual wear DO NOT USE THE BLADE.
  3. Inspect the saw to make sure that all components are in proper working order. See manufacturer's operating instructions.
  4. Wear proper safety attire and observe all ANSI and OSHA safety guidelines.
  5. Before mounting the blade on the saw make sure the blade and flanges are clean, and free of dirt or debris.
  6. Mount the blade solidly and firmly. Wrench tighten the arbor nut.
  7. Put all equipment safety guards in proper position.
  8. Check water flow for adequate coolant supply to both sides of blade.
  9. For tile and masonry saws, make sure cutting cart and accessories are properly attached and aligned. Set cutting head so the blade is at least 1/4" below the top surface of the cart, and the tray should be filled with enough water to cover the pump.
  10. For concrete saws, align the saw in the proper cutting path BEFORE beginning.
  11. Clear the work area of unnecessary people. Never allow anyone to stand IN FRONT of a saw that is about to be started or is in the act of cutting.
  12. Check blade shaft RPM's with a tachometer to verify that the saw's RPM's meet the requirements of the blade manufacturer.
  13. Make sure that electric powered saws are plugged into a properly grounded circuit.
  14. Make sure there is adequate ventilation for gas or diesel powered saws.
  15. Disengage transmission or place in neutral before starting self-propelled concrete saws.

When Sawing:

  1. Cut in a STRAIGHT line.
  2. Saw only as deep as the job specifications and conditions require.
  3. For tile and masonry saws, maintain secure grip on material being cut, and feed material slowly into the blade. Do not jam it.
  4. For concrete saws, lower the blade into the cut slowly and proceed to cut forward with consistent pressure that does not force the blade to "climb" out of the cut.
  5. For dry cutting blades, do not cut deeper than 1" per pass with a concrete saw, and no more than 3" deep per pass with a high speed cut-off saw. Step cut to achieve deeper cuts.
  6. Remember - all sawing is done at full throttle.
